Caballero claims cup for City

29 February 2016

The Capital One Cup Final between Liverpool FC and Manchester City FC ended in a dramatic penalty shoot out. The match finished 1 -1 after extra time with goals from Fernandinho and Coutinho. Throughout the 90 minutes and extra time both goalkeepers made excellent saves forcing the Cup to be decided by penalties.

After Man City had lost 5 – 1 to Chelsea in the FA Cup final the fans and media have heavily criticised the cup goalkeeper and questioned his place in the the team. Media branded the Argentine keeper as ‘dreadful’ and ‘comical’ after his performance against Chelsea.

City manager, Manuel Pellegrini, despite the criticism kept his word and England keeper Joe Hart remained on the bench against Liverpool.

The first two penalties saw Manchester City down by one as Fernandinho, Man City’s earlier goal scorer, had his penalty saved whilst Can found the back of the net for Liverpool. Following this an intuitive and confident performance from Willy Caballero saw Man City claim the Cup. Caballero saved penalty shots from Leiva, Couthino and Lallana whilst Navas, Aguero and Toure all found the back of the net for Man City.

Man City currently sit in 4th in the Premiership table 9 points and a game in hand behind top spot club Leicester City FC, whilst Liverpool are sitting mid-table in 9th a further 9 points behind Man City but with a game in hand. As fate would have it the two clubs face each other again on Wednesday in what will no doubt be a tense Premiership clash at Anfield.
