Boro back on top

28 December 2015

Middlesborough FC whose game was postponed on Boxing Day sat second in the table behind Derby County this afternoon.

Sheffield Wednesday made 5 changes from their starting 11 which beat Birmingham 3 – 0 on Boxing Day, including Wiggins, Palmer and Semedo starting.

Boro took an early lead at the Riverside Stadium with a goal in the first minute from Stuani assisted by Downing. Stuani has now scored 6 goals this season.

Despite the possession being relatively equal at half time Wednesday failed to get a shot at goal in the first half.

The second half saw some important defensive play from Wednesday in which Wiggins notably played an important role.

Middlesborough also felt increased pressure in the second half with several good attacking pieces by the Owls.

Despite Wednesday lifting their game in the second half their efforts weren’t quite enough against the disciplined Boro to take any points from the game and it ended 1-0.

Middlesborough take top spot in the Championship once again, but this could change if Derby win tomorrow, who face Leeds at Elland Road.

Middlesborough have now equaled their club record of 7 straight clean sheets and defender Ayala deservedly received man of the match.
