Boxing Day round up

26 December 2015

Boxing Day football was full of excitement and again some unexpected results.

An early kick off at the Britannia Stadium gave mid-table Stoke fans reason to continue festive celebrations, beating Van Gaal’s Manchester United 2 – 0. Man United have now lost 4 games in a row and the pressure is on for their next game when they face Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday.

Current leaders Leicester City lost to Liverpool at Anfield 1 – 0 with a winning goal from sub Benteke but still maintain top position in the table.

Chelsea who took the lead against Watford with a goal from Costa were held to a 2 – 2 draw after Oscar missed a late penalty and chance to take all 3 points for Chelsea – they remain 15th in the table.

Arsenal who could have taken top spot with a win played away in a later kick off and were beaten by the Saints by a shocking 4 – 0.

In the Championship Derby County have moved into top spot after beating Fulham 2 – 0 at the iPro Stadium and are unbeaten in their last 7 games.

The top four teams in the championship are only separated by 4 points – Hull won their game, Brighton were held to a goalless draw and Middlesborough had their game postponed against Blackburn due to a waterlogged pitch.

Rotherham beat bottom of the table Bolton by 4 – 0 and lifted them out of the relegation zone above Bristol City on goal difference.

League One suffered with a lot of matches being postponed due to pitch conditions, however Gillingham played and beat Swindon away 1 – 3 keeping it tight at the top of the table.

There is little rest bite now with matches taking place early next week as we see 2015 come to an end and the transfer window soon to open.
